A doctor opens his doors
Dr. Basavapunnaiah Kondabolu — MBBS, Andhra University, Vizag, and a Gold Medal in Obstetrics — begins his medical practice in Guntur from a small rented building.
Krishna Children’s Hospital, Guntur — a unit of Basavapunnaiah Hospitals, established in 1959 — carries forward a proud legacy of compassionate, quality healthcare spanning three generations.
Our journey began with Dr. Basavapunnaiah Kondabolu, who hailed from a humble agricultural background in rural Guntur. Through sheer dedication and academic excellence, he earned his MBBS from Andhra University, Vizag, graduating with a Gold Medal in Obstetrics. In January 1958, he started his medical practice in Guntur, operating from a small rented building.
What began as a modest general practice quickly grew into an 80-bedded multi-specialty nursing home by 1972 at Kothapet Bose Centre. The hospital served patients across General Surgery, General Medicine, and Obstetrics & Gynecology, becoming a trusted healthcare provider for communities across Guntur, Krishna and Prakasam districts.
After his retirement, Dr. Basavapunnaiah’s two sons took over the mantle and expanded the hospital’s scope of services.
In February 1990, his younger son, Dr. Krishna Prasad (MD, DCH), established Krishna Children’s Hospital as a dedicated pediatric unit under Basavapunnaiah Hospitals. With over three decades of successful pediatric practice, it earned a reputation for excellence in child health.
Today, the third generation continues to carry the torch forward. Dr. Chaitanya Kondabolu, trained in Pediatric Surgery at CMC Vellore, has joined the team, expanding the hospital’s capabilities to include advanced pediatric and neonatal surgical care, as well as dedicated intensive care units.
Now a 50-bedded pediatric hospital, Krishna Children’s Hospital is committed to delivering round-the-clock, affordable and specialized care with a team of expert consultants and a legacy of trust.
Every date below comes from the hospital’s own record of its history.

Every room, every piece of equipment and every member of staff here is set up for patients aged nought to eighteen. Nothing is adapted from adult care.
A children’s emergency that does not close, because a fever at two in the morning is still an emergency to the family holding the child.
Families here are often on their second or third generation with us. That continuity is the point — the doctor already knows the history.
